Gilbert, AZ – The Family Caregiver is Facing Her Own Health Crisis
Tina had the caregiver for her aging mother for more than a year by the time she began to notice issues with her own health. Because of Tina’s busy work schedule and responsibilities she had providing care at home for her mother, she ignored many of the common symptoms that she was experiencing during the first several months.
After some encouragement from her family and even her mother, she went to see her doctor and had been diagnosed with cancer. She was devastated, to say the least. At 56 years of age, the last thing she ever thought she would have to deal with was cancer. This form of cancer had a high success rate with chemotherapy and radiation treatment, but she knew she could no longer be the primary caregiver for her mother.
She was going to need all of her energy for this fight against the cancer. However, Tina felt as though she was caught between a rock and a hard place – there were no other family members who lived in the area who could look after her mother.
She delayed treatment for several weeks as she tried to figure out a plan. She was talking with a coworker one day who recommended she hire a professional in-home care provider to take care of her mother. Tina wasn’t so sure because the things she had heard about these type of caregivers in the news. Her coworker assured her that the majority of people are kind, compassionate, and experienced individuals who would take great care of her mother.
Tina finally committed to talking to her mother about visiting a home care agency to learn more. They eventually hired an experienced caregiver who ended up being a blessing to the both of them. Tina could focus on her treatments knowing her mother was being cared for and that she was not alone.
